NEEV - FOUNDATION FOR LEGAL AID

Neev – Foundation for Legal Aid was founded in July 2020, with the aim of enabling access to justice for the urban poor in Delhi. Created with the mission of expanding access to the law—in particular, to victims of human rights violations, and in cases concerning women’s and children’s rights, Neev is presently operational out of two Centres, located in Delhi.

MISSION: Our mission is to use the law as a catalyst for social change and to create more socially just outcomes. Neev draws on the use of legal aid, awareness and mediation to provide and improve access to the legal system for citizens.

We believe that through legal education, quasi-legal support, and pro-bono litigation services, we can contribute to the form and idea of an egalitarian society in practice.

VISION

By furthering access to legal aid and education, we take active steps toward realizing our vision of an egalitarian India. Our work employs a four-prong initiative:

  • Legal Aid, including mediation and quasi-legal support

  • Social - Legal Entitlement, like voter ID camps, Aadhaar card camps, Labour card camps, etc.

  • Legal Education and awareness

  • Legal Advocacy

WHAT WE DO

Furthering the cause of legal awareness and access to equitable justice is the most important goal of our organization. We seek to support, empower, and provide legal support to the community in a safe and affordable environment. Our success isn’t measured in terms of wealth or profit margin, but in the lives we are able to impact.

MISHIKA SINGH, ADVOCATE

Mishika’s work has primarily been focused on the rights of women. She holds a Bachelors in Journalism and Bachelors of Laws from the University of Delhi. She also holds an LLM from the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (in association with University of Peace) where she studied Transnational Crime and Justice.

After graduating in law in 2014, Mishika has primarily worked with victims of domestic violence from the marginalized section. Alongside her legal practice, Mishika has also regularly been organising legal workshops with domestic workers residing in various slum areas in Delhi. In 2019, Mishika formed an informal collective, called ‘Lawyers for Detainees’, which is a pan-India collective of lawyers engaged in defending the rights of citizens protesting against the establishment. After the riots hit Delhi in February 2020, Mishika and a few of her colleagues began working closely on the issue of compensation to be disbursed by the State with around 400 riot survivors. Mishika has founded Neev with the aim of making legal awareness and justice more accessible and affordable.
